The American University Girne ( Turkish Girne American University , English Girne American University , abbreviation GAU ) is a state-recognized private university in Kyrenia (Girne in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus ).
The university was founded in 1985 by England-educated Serhat Akpinar as an independent non-profit institution for higher education. Contracts with American universities ensured international recognition. The first university teachers mostly came from England. University buildings and accommodations are located in the suburb of Karaoğlanoğlu , about four kilometers west of the city of Kyrenia. Offices have been set up in Canterbury , Istanbul , Karpas , Hong Kong , Washington, DC and Chișinău (Moldova), UK .
Over 5,800 students are enrolled in Bachelor, Master and PhD programs. The university's lingua franca is English .
history
The university was founded in 1985 as the first accredited university in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which had been established two years earlier. In the following years, campuses were built in Great Britain, Hong Kong, the US capital Washington and the Turkish city of Istanbul; in 2015, students came from 103 countries. The business faculty was accredited by the International Business Education Assembly in the USA, as well as by the European Council Business Union , and the university as a whole by the National Accreditation and Information Center of Great Britain . The tourism program has been recognized by TedQual , which in turn acts on behalf of the World Tourism Organization . The engineering programs, in turn, are approved by the accreditation agency for courses in engineering, computer science, natural sciences and mathematics e. V. recognized in Düsseldorf, the ASIIN .
The university is a member of the International Association of Universities (IAU), the Association of Universities of the Islamic World , the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), the Leader Hospitality Schools in Europe ( Eurhodip), the European Council of International Schools (ECIS), the Council of International Schools (CIS), the European Council for Business Education (ECBE), the European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE), the International Vocational Education and Training Association ( IVETA) of UNESCO . In addition to the USA and Eastern European countries, Pakistan , the United Arab Emirates, Oman , Thailand , Iran , Jordan , Iraq , Lebanon , Palestine, Kyrgyzstan and numerous other countries recognize the university and cooperate with it.
