The Eucarta Amethystina ( Eucarta amethystina ), formerly known as Ginger Violetthöckereule or Auwiesen-Prachteule called, is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of cutworms (Noctuidae).

description

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 28 to 34 millimeters. The color of the upper forewing varies from pinkish gray to pinkish brown. Sometimes they shimmer amethyst-colored . This shade is also responsible for the choice of the epithet . Kidney and ring flaws are large, dark brown in color and have a whitish border. The midfield and the submarginal region are darkened. The upper side of the hind wing is colored light gray-brown without drawing. The proboscis is well developed.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars have a green base color. They show narrow yellow-white back and side back lines as well as yellowish to reddish, white bordered side stripes. The spiracles are black.

Doll

The black-brown doll is provided with two thorns on the cremaster .

Similar species

In the case of Eucarta virgo , the middle field is bounded by white lines in the form of a triangle.

distribution and habitat

The Amethysteule is widespread locally in Central Europe. An occurrence in the British Isles is doubtful. The eastern extension extends through Belarus over the Urals to the Pacific Ocean . The species lives mainly on moist meadows, on the edge of floodplain and swamp forests as well as in the bank areas of ponds, lakes and rivers.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths can be found from June to August. They occasionally fly to artificial light sources and occasionally visit baits in numbers . As food plants living in late summer crawler serve Umbelliferae (Apiaceae), for example Ross cumin ( Laser trilobum ) silaum silaus ( Silaum silaus ), Peucedanum officinale ( Peucedanum officinale ) and Wild carrot ( Daucus carota subsp. Carota ). Parsley leaves are also accepted for breeding . The species overwinters as a pupa.

Danger

The Amethysteule occurs locally and rarely in some southern and southeastern German federal states, but in many places it is threatened with extinction or has been lost. In Baden-Württemberg it is on the Red List of Threatened Species in Category 3 (“Endangered”), as its habitats are severely restricted by drainage, excessive fertilization, the conversion of meadows into arable land and the development of floodplain areas.
