Aminata Touré (born October 12, 1962 in Dakar ) is a Senegalese politician , human rights activist and former UN official . She was Prime Minister of Senegal from September 2013 to July 2014 .

Life and education

As the daughter of a doctor and a midwife , she enjoyed extensive training. She spent her first school years in the city of Tambacounda , where her father practiced. She then attended the Gaston-Berger grammar school in Kaolack . She completed her school education with distinction and in 1981 received the business diploma at the Van Vollenhoven high school in Dakar. She studied in France and received a Magister Artium in Dijon , a professional master's degree (DESS) in business management in Aix-en-Provence and a PhD in international financial management from the École Internationale de Management in Paris .

She started her professional career in 1988 at the headquarters of SOTRAC, the company for public transport in Dakar, where she headed the Marketing and Communication department.

In the early 1990s she directed health and family programs for the Asbef (Association sénégalaise pour le bien-être familial). From 1995 she worked for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). First, she was seconded to the Burkina Faso Family Ministry as a senior technical advisor . In addition, she worked in the French-speaking countries of West Africa for the UNFPA as a coordinator of the HIV program. In particular, she advocated family planning and reproductive health.

In 2003 she was appointed Director of the UNFPA Human Rights Division in New York . She left her residence in New Jersey and UNFPA in 2010 to return to work as a politician in Senegal.

Her fortune, which consists of two properties in Senegal and another in the USA, is estimated at around 1.2 million euros. She is divorced from Oumar Sarr , a minister in the Abdoulaye Wade government .

Political career

Her political engagement began at the age of 14 when she became active in left-wing student circles. She became a member of the communist labor movement in Senegal (LCT), later the Movement for Socialism and Unity (MSU).

On the occasion of the Senegalese presidential election campaign in 1993, she was the first female campaign manager in Senegal on behalf of Landing Savané .

In 2010 she left the United Nations in New York City to return to Senegal's political arena as the Cabinet Director of Macky Sall , President of the Alliance pour la République. In 2011 she participated in the creation of his election program for the 2012 presidential election.

Under Prime Minister Abdoul Mbaye she held the post of Justice Minister as the successor to Cheikh Tidiane Sy . It was her concern to reform the legal system in Senegal. During the first few months of her term in office, she led the fight against the corruption of the previous regime, as requested by President Sall. The key figure was Karim Wade , son of the former president.

On September 1, 2013, President Macky Sall removed all ministers from office and appointed Aminata Touré Prime Minister. The next day she began forming a government .

After the electoral defeat of the ruling APR-Yaakaar party in the local elections in Dakar, President Sall dismissed Aminata Touré on July 4, 2014. and appointed Mahammed Boun Abdallah Dionne as her successor.
