Amit Bhaduri

Amit Bhaduri (born October 4, 1940 in Calcutta , India ) is an Indian economist and university professor. He is a professor emeritus at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. He vehemently criticizes the growth strategies led by companies and the development terrorism that have arisen in the course of globalization in developing countries, including India. He formulated alternative development strategies that aim to mobilize the strengths and energies of the poor masses who are currently excluded from the growth process.

life and work

Bhaduri studied at the Presidency College in Calcutta , the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received his PhD from Cambridge University . In 1963 he taught as Professor of Economics at the Presidency College in Calcutta. In the following years he was a professor and visiting professor at various universities around the world, including the Institute of Management in Calcutta, the Delhi School of Economics, the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, the Center for Development Research in Trivandrum , the El Colegio de México , at Stanford University , at the University of Vienna , at the University of Linz , at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology at the University of Bremen , in Italy at the University of Bologna and the University of Pavia . He received a scholarship from various university institutes in Germany, Austria, Sweden and Italy. He worked in various expert committees of the United Nations and was a member of several national and international commissions. He has published more than 60 articles in standard international journals and has written six books: The Economic Structure of Backward Agriculture (London: Academic Press, 1982), Macroeconomics: The Dynamics of Commodity Production (London: Macmillan, 1986), Unconventional Economic Essays (New -Delhi: Oxford University Press, 1992), A Smart Person's Guide to Liberalization (in collaboration with D. Nayyar) (India: Penguin, 1996), On the Frontier of Economic Theory and History (New Delhi: Oxford University Press, 1999 ) and development with dignity (India: National Book Trust, 2006). Some of his articles and books have been translated into various Asian and European languages. He is currently an internationally selected professor at Pavia University in Italy and visiting professor in the Council for Social Development of Delhi University. He teaches part of the year in Italy and lives mainly in New Delhi with his wife Madhu Bhaduri , a former diplomat. Both are intensively involved in various activist groups.
