Amizmiz ( Central Usage Tamazight ⴰⵎⵥⵎⵉⵥ ) is a small town of about 8,000 inhabitants and the capital of a rural community ( commune rurale ) with about 14,000 inhabitants in the province of Al Haouz in the region Marrakech-Safi in Morocco .
location
Amizmiz is about 1150 m above sea level on the northern flank of the High Atlas ; the city of Marrakech is just under 60 km (driving distance) to the northeast.
population
The inhabitants of the place are almost without exception of Berber descent and mostly belong to the Schlöh subgroup . Colloquial language is a regional dialect of the Taschelhit , Moroccan Arabic and some French are also spoken.
economy
For centuries, the inhabitants of the village and the surrounding villages lived as self-sufficient farmers from agriculture, which in addition to the cultivation of cereals (mostly barley) and vegetables (onions, carrots, beans, etc.) also included pomegranate , olive and walnut trees and livestock ( Goats, sheep, chickens). Many men have been working in Marrakech or in the cities of the north since the mid-20th century.
history
In the absence of written records - as is usual in the Berber regions of the Maghreb - nothing is known about the earlier history of the place. However, it can be assumed that the originally forested area was first roamed by hunters and later by cattle nomads, who gradually settled here.
Attractions
The formerly existing single-storey houses made of field stones and clay have all disappeared; Today's townscape with its multi-storey houses made of hollow blocks and concrete is largely modern and corresponds to that of many Berber towns in Morocco.
