During the rampage in Volkmarsen in Hesse on February 24, 2020, a 29-year-old intentionally drove his vehicle into a group of spectators of the Rose Monday procession . The number of victims is given as 122 physically or more than 154 physically or mentally injured .

A Rose Monday procession took place in the core town of Volkmarsen that day. At around 2:30 p.m., a silver Mercedes circumnavigated the barrier and accelerated into the crowd. The driver of the vehicle was 29-year-old Maurice P., who was overpowered by witnesses on site and then arrested by the police. He came into custody . An initially suspected alcoholization was not confirmed in corresponding tests.

P. came from Gaggenau in Baden-Württemberg and had lived there for 10 years.

At least 20 children were injured, the youngest three years old. The injured children were treated in children's hospitals in Kassel and Paderborn . At the end of March 2020, two adults were still being treated in the intensive care unit. The case was investigated by the General Public Prosecutor's Office in Frankfurt am Main .

The MDR television magazine Brisant reported on June 3, 2020 that the perpetrator was still silent about the motives for the rampage and hardly cooperated with his lawyer and the psychologist commissioned with an expert opinion. The Hessian Prime Minister Volker Bouffier said on September 22, 2020 in the show Markus Lanz that the perpetrator had not given any information to date and that nothing had been found about the motives.

In December 2020, the Frankfurt am Main public prosecutor brought charges against the gunman. He has been charged with attempted murder in 91 cases, dangerous physical harm in 90 cases, and dangerous interference with road traffic . The trial before the Kassel Regional Court began on May 3, 2021. On December 16, 2021, the perpetrator was sentenced to life imprisonment. The particular gravity of the guilt was determined.
