Amor is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district of Leiria . It has 4,747 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
Unproven legends point to the origin of the place in the time of King D. Dinis (1261-1325). According to the traditional legend, he is said to have had a lover here. As a result, the previously unknown and insignificant place is said to have received its current name and popularity (Cupid, Portuguese for love ). However, the legend lacks historical evidence. The place was first mentioned in an undated letter from King Sanchos II , who ruled from 1223 to 1247.
Amor has been an independent community since 1630.
Culture and sights
In addition to the Igreja de Barreiros (also Igreja da Imaculada Conceição ) from the 18th century, the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Amor (also Igreja de São Paulo ) is a listed building. The single-nave baroque church was built in 1630 to raise Cupid to an independent community.
