Amphawa District ( Thai : อำเภอ อัมพวา ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district) of Samut Songkhram . Samut Songkhram Province is located in the central region of Thailand .
geography
The district is located a little inland on the northwestern edge of the Bay of Bangkok .
Neighboring districts are (from north clockwise): Amphoe Bang Khonthi and Mueang Samut Songkhram Samut Songkhram, Amphoe Ban Laem and Khao Yoi of Phetchaburi Province , and Amphoe Pak Tho and Wat Phleng the province of Ratchaburi .
The Mae Nam Mae Klong ( Mae Klong River ) flows through the northern part of the district.
history
In the Ayutthaya period, the area of what is now Amphawa was known as Khwaeng Bang Chang , a small agricultural and trading community. It is recorded that it existed since the reign of King Prasat Thong .
The future King Phutthaloetla ( Rama II ) was born here, as his father was the governor of Ratchaburi at the time.

Attractions
- Wat Amphawan Chetiyaram (Thai: วัด อัมพวัน เจ ติ ยา ราม ) - Buddhist temple ( Wat ) from the early Rattanakosin period. The viharn has recently been renovated and painted with wall paintings in a historical style.
- King Phutthaloetla's Birthplace - The birthplace is likely in or right next to Wat Amphawan Chetiyaram. Today there is a "King Phutthaloetla Naphalai Memorial Park" (Thai: อุทยาน พระบรม ราชา นุ สร ณ์ or อุทยาน ร for short . 2 ) with four buildings in traditional style. Both the traditional way of life and old craftsmanship are presented here. There are many trees and plants in the well-kept park that have been mentioned in Thai literature.
- Tha Kha Floating Market (Thai: ตลาดน้ำ ท่า คา ) - a small market on the bank of a river that flows into Mae Klong. The market takes place on the 2nd, 7th and 12th day of the waxing and waning moon. It is also open on weekends. Another floating market is located at Wat Amphawan Chetiyaram. This is open daily.

There are three municipalities with "small town" status ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the district:
- Suan Luang (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล สวนหลวง ) consisting of the complete tambon Suan Luang.
- Amphawa (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล อัมพวา ) consisting of the complete tambon Amphawa.
- Mueang Mai (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล เหมือง ใหม่ ) consisting of parts of the Tambon Mueang Mai.
In addition, there are ten " tambon administration organizations " ( องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล - Tambon Administrative Organizations, TAO)
- Tha Kha (Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล ท่า คา ) consisting of the complete Tambon Tha Kha.
- Wat Pradu (Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล วัด ประดู่ ) consisting of the complete tambon Wat Pradu.
- Mueang Mai (Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล เหมือง ใหม่ ) consisting of parts of the Tambon Mueang Mai.
