Amplang ( Indonesian ), also called kerupuk kuku macan , is a traditional savory fish biscuit snack made in Indonesia and Malaysia . Amplang usually consist of Wahoo ( ikan Tenggiri ) or from the Spanish mackerel made with starch mixed and other ingredients and then fried.

There are many Amplang variants in shape and size, claw-shaped (hence kuku macan , "nail / claw for eating") and cube-shaped, up to the size of a table tennis ball . The color varies from yellow to light brown.

distribution

Amplang

In Indonesia, Amplang are traditionally associated with Samarinda , the capital of East Kalimantan , as there has been extensive manufacturing there since the 1970s. Amplang was originally made from Chitala (family of the Old World Knifefish , ikan pipih or ikan belida ). Since the species has become rare, however, it has largely been replaced by wahoo ( ikan tenggiri ) or snakehead fish ( gabus ). From Samarinda, the pastry spread to other cities in Borneo ( Balikpapan , Banjarmasin , Pontianak ) and also to neighboring Sabah in Malaysia.

Amplang is often bought as a souvenir ( oleh-oleh ) from East Kalimantan. Today the crackers can also be found in Jakarta , Bandung , Surabaya and Medan . There are now further production facilities in Balikpapan , Pontianak in West Kalimantan and in Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan .

There are now other flavors such as shrimp and seaweed .
