history

Rokin (2005)

The company Merlin Entertainments Group (MEG) opened in September 2005. The Amsterdam Dungeon in Amsterdam city center, in the street Rokin .

The building has a historical background and was therefore well suited to house the museum. This is where the miracle of Amsterdam occurred in 1345 . To commemorate the miracle, a procession, the Stille Omgang ("silent tour"), has taken place near the house since the Middle Ages . To commemorate this event, a church was built here (between 1346 and 1347), the Heilige Stede .

Since the building is under monument protection ( Rijksmonument ), archaeological investigations were carried out first before MEG could set up the museum. Among other things, the family grave of a former rich merchant , Gherrit Guertsen Doothooft, was discovered. Over time, a mosque, the Hotel Park Plaza and an action house were housed in the house.

The Amsterdam Dungeon has a mirror maze. With a group of a maximum of 30 people, the dark sides (“duistere kant”) of Amsterdam's history are presented in eleven rooms.

  • Room 1: The "dark sides" of Amsterdam in the former church.
  • Room 2: The Bloody Inquisition , torture chamber and tools.
  • Room 3: Magical music in the Music Bar . Here a magician is issuing warnings.
  • Room 4: Across the Batavia , a ship of the Dutch East India Company with its gruesome circumstances of illness, violence and death.
  • Room 5: An anatomical theater by Doctor Deyman . The notorious criminal Zwarte Jan is subjected to an autopsy .
  • Room 6: The death chamber.
  • Room 7: The Spanish Inquisition around 1600.
  • Room 8: apparition, witch hunt.
  • Room 9: The dark streets of Amsterdam in the mirror labyrinth.
  • Room 10: The plague epidemic of 1664.
  • Room 11: Lean Hein of Death . The final journey to doom.

In the Marco Polo Travel Atlas Amsterdam , The Amsterdam Dungeon is described as “For friends of the macabre; Scary exhibition about the dark side of Amsterdam's history, including live demonstrations and a ghost train ride. "
