    Buildings and history

Joint building of the regional social court and the Neustrelitz branch

The Neustrelitz branch of the Waren (Müritz) district court is located in the listed building complex Tiergartenstrasse 5 / corner of Töpferstrasse 13a near the city center of Neustrelitz. Since March 2, 2015, the building complex has also been the seat of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Regional Social Court , which was previously located in Neubrandenburg. The Neustrelitz district court was previously housed in the building at Töpferstrasse 13a, which was built in 1865 as a grand ducal regional court with a courtroom and a prison in the courtyard, based on designs by Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel . In March 1925, the Neustrelitz district court erroneously sentenced Josef Jakubowski from Poland to death for murder . It is one of the most significant legal errors in German legal history of the 20th century. The building at Tiergartenstrasse 5 was a branch of the Ministry for State Security of the GDR (MfS) during the GDR era . The prison building in the courtyard used by the MfS as a pre-trial detention center is now a memorial to this time when the building was in use. Black steles with corresponding inscription on the footpath leading past the building at Tiergartenstrasse 5 indicate the place of remembrance in the courtyard of the building complex.

    Superior courts

The District Court of Neubrandenburg was superordinate to the Neustrelitz District Court. The competent higher regional court was the higher regional court in Rostock .

With the conversion of the local court into a branch of the local court of Waren (Müritz), the jurisdiction of the regional court of Neubrandenburg and the higher regional court of Rostock remains.
