Amy Elizabeth Adams , mostly just A. Elizabeth Adams , (born March 28, 1892 in Delaware , New Jersey , † February 15, 1962 in South Hadley , Massachusetts ) was an American zoologist .

Life

Amy Elizabeth Adams attended Blair Academy in Blairstown , New Jersey and enrolled at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley , Massachusetts in September 1909 , majoring in Mathematics . She only took zoology as a minor in her basic studies, but changed her major to zoology through the influence of Cornelia Clapp and Ann Morgan and received her Bachelor of Science there in 1914 . In 1914/15 she worked as a laboratory assistant at the zoology department of Mount Holyoke College before studying zoology at Columbia University , where she received her Master of Science degree in 1919 . In the same year she returned to Mount Holyoke College, where she taught zoology. In 1922 she received a research grant from Yale University , where she worked at the Osborn Zoological Laboratory, where she received her Ph.D. in 1926.

Adams taught at Mount Holyoke College since 1919, was promoted to professor in 1928 and held that position until her retirement in 1957. She gave lectures in general zoology, comparative anatomy , embryology and experimental zoology. In 1920/21, 1929 and 1937 she served as head of the Department of Zoology and in 1926/27 as dean of Mount Holyoke College. She was considered one of the most renowned zoologists of the 1930s and also received numerous research grants during the Great Depression , such as the Bache Fund of the National Academy of Sciences , the Rockefeller Foundation , the National Research Council , the American Association for the Advancement of Science or Sigma Xi . Her main research interests were in the fields of experimental zoology and embryology.

Adams was a member of numerous societies, including the Endocrine Society , the Society for Experimental Biology and an elected member of the New York Academy of Sciences . She also served as Chair of Phi Beta Kappa at Mount Holyoke College for four years .
