Aníbal do Paço Quesado (born September 22, 1931 in Perre , Viana do Castelo , Portugal ; † August 6, 2011 in Mainz ) was a Portuguese archaeologist .

Life

Aníbal do Paço Quesado studied archeology and Catholic theology in Rome . He worked for the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn for five years as an excavation assistant and excavation manager. In 1965 he moved to the Landesmuseum Mainz and since then has dealt in particular with Roman and medieval Mainz. He took over the excavation on the fire place, during which a Roman bank system, remnants of high medieval storage buildings and the foundations of the Gothic department store "Am Brand" were exposed. Numerous other archaeological investigations followed in the Mainz urban area - including the remains of the church of St. Gangolf next to today's state parliament and the excavations in St. Emmeran . Here he was able to prove three previous buildings of today's church building. His excavations on the Mainzer Liebfrauenplatz in 1973 and 1974 were also revealing . The foundations of the previous church of the Mainz Cathedral and the Romanesque collegiate church "Our Lady", which Archbishop Siegfried I built on its foundations in 1069, came to light. Since 1975 Aníbal do Paço Quesado has been working largely in the back office of the Landesmuseum Mainz. Together with his colleagues, he planned the refurbishment of the stone hall, which reopened in 1981, with its impressive architecture and sculptures. In addition, the order of the stone magazine and the re-inventory of the old Roman finds of the Landesmuseum Mainz are to be owed to him.
