Anatol Roshko

Anatol Roshko (born July 15, 1923 in Bellevue (Alberta) , Canada ; † January 23, 2017 ) was a Canadian-born American physicist and engineer who worked on hydrodynamics .

Roshko studied at the University of Alberta , where he made his bachelor's degree as a physics engineer in 1945. In 1947 he received his master's degree from Caltech , where he received his doctorate in 1953 under Hans Liepmann . There he rose from Assistant Professor (1955) to Theodore von Kármán Professor of Aeronautics (1985). Since 1994 he was professor emeritus there.

He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering , the National Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American Physical Society , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics . He was an honorary member of the Indian Academy of Sciences. In 1987 he received the American Physical Society's hydrodynamics award . In 1999 he received the Tymoshenko Medal .

From 1954 to 1990 he was a consultant at McDonnell Douglas and from 1984 to 1990 at Rockwell International . He died on January 23, 2017 at the age of 93.
