The Anderson River is a 692 km long river in the Northwest Territories in Canada .

It rises north from Colville Lake , which is located about 100 km northwest of the Great Bear Lake . His area of influence includes a group of lakes in the area around Lac des Bois , about 50 km northwest of the Great Bear Lake. It flows in the area between the Coppermine River and the Mackenzie first to the northwest. South of Tadenet Lake it changes its course to the west. Shortly before its main tributary, the Carnwath River, flows into it, it changes its flow direction again to the north, which it maintains until the end. Eventually it flows into the eastern end of Liverpool Bay , part of the Beaufort Sea .

At its mouth is the Anderson River Delta Bird Sanctuary . The river has a varied landscape. In the upper and middle section there are many canyons and deep valleys. The 6 km long Falcon Canyon with cliffs up to 40 meters high is particularly impressive . The Anderson River offers canoeists and rafters, especially near Falcon Canyon, rapids up to Class III. The river was named after its discoverer James Anderson, who was employed by the Hudson's Bay Company .

Black or white spruces usually grow on the banks of the river . The last stretch of the river lies in the treeless tundra of Canada. The river is also home to many animals. In addition to musk ox and moose , grizzly bears live here . Large herds of Greenland reindeer often migrate south across the valley in July .
