Andinobates virolinensis ( Synonym : Dendrobates virolinensis ) is a kind from the family of poison dart frogs , which are often referred to as poison dart frogs. The frog species is endemic to Colombia .

description

Andinobates virolinensis is a very small species of frog with a head-trunk length of no more than two centimeters.

distribution

Andinobates virolinensis occurs only in the Departamento de Santander and in the Departamento de Cundinamarca - that is the province around the Colombian capital Bogotá in the central Cordillera of the Andes .

Occurrence and way of life

Andinobates virolinensis is a ground dweller and lives in the cloud forest of the Andes. The females lay their eggs in the leaf litter , the males bring the tadpoles after they have hatched to a bromeliad funnel filled with water , where they develop further. The reproductive phase extends over the entire year. The diet consists of various arthropods , mainly mites , springtails , ants and insect larvae. This food choice hardly differs from that of other poison dart frogs.

Danger

Andinobates virolinensis is listed as endangered on the IUCN list of endangered species because the species is threatened with habitat loss . However, it is common in places in its area of distribution.

Andinobates virolinensis - like other poison dart frogs - can often be found in pet shops, although the collecting of poison dart frogs in the wild has been banned since 1985

Systematics and taxonomy

The species Andinobates virolinensis has been transferred several times to another genus as Minyobates virolinensis since it was first described by Ruíz-Carranza and Ramírez-Pinilla in 1992 . In 2000 it was incorporated into the genus Dendrobates , and in 2006 into the genus Ranitomeya . In 2011, Twomey, Brown and others separated the Ranitomeya species of the Andes under the generic name Andinobates from those of the Amazon basin, which remained in the genus Ranitomeya . Andinobates virolinensis has been a member of the dwarf tree climber group since 2007.
