Andreas Báthory , Hungarian András Báthory , (* 1563 in Szilágysomlyó (Șimleu Silvaniei) ; † October 31, 1599 in Csíkszentdomokos ( Romanian Sândominic ) in Transylvania ) was a cardinal , sovereign of Transylvania and the son of Margit Majláthory and András Báthor ).

Life

Growing up at the Polish royal court under King Stephan Báthory , his ecclesiastical career began early, he was promoted to cardinal at a young age in 1584 and shortly afterwards cardinal deacon of Sant'Adriano al Foro .

In 1583 and 1586 he visited the Vatican in Rome. In 1583 he became Protonotarius , cardinal in 1584 and Prince-Bishop of Warmia in 1589 .

On March 30, 1599 he received rule over Transylvania, which his relative Sigismund Báthory gave up in favor of András. The Wallachian voivod Mihai Petraşcu, called "the brave" Mihai Viteazul , took advantage of the enormous tensions of the nobility in Transylvania, attacked András with his army and defeated him with the help of the Szeklers on October 18, 1599 in the battle of Schellenberg near Sibiu . He then fled towards Moldva, but was found and murdered by the Szeklern at Csíkszentdomokos . Mihai moved into Weißenburg (Gyulafehérvár) and proclaimed himself prince. The Transylvanian nobility did not agree with the self-appointed prince and called the imperial army to help. The troops led by Georg Basta defeated Mihai's army at Miriszló on September 18, 1600 .
