André (grape variety)

André is a red wine variety . The new variety comes as the Zweigelt a crossing between Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent. The variety originated in Velké Pavlovice / Großpawlowitz in the Czech Republic in 1961 or 1960, depending on the source, and has been registered in the state list of varieties of the Czech Republic since 1980 . She was bred by Jaroslav Horák (1922–1994) at the OSEVA Institute - Krajsky semenarsky podnik Slechtitelska stanice . It is named after the educator and farmer Christian Karl André (1763–1831), who founded the world's first association for fruit processing in Brno . This variety currently occupies around 2% of the area under vines in the Czech Republic. Their cultivation is also permitted in Germany.

The late-ripening and high-yielding grape variety must be grown in prime locations so that it ripens well and the acidity of the red wine remains low. In terms of wine type, it comes very close to St. Laurent and can produce a full, dark red wine in good years . André is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ).
