André Bouchard

André Bouchard (born January 26, 1946 in Montreal ; † March 4, 2010 ibid) was a Canadian ecologist and environmentalist who worked for most of his career at the University of Montreal and the Montreal Botanical Garden . He has received several awards for his work in his specialist areas of landscape ecology and ecology of plant communities .

Life

Bouchard was born in Montreal and grew up in Côte-des-Neiges . His family came from Saint-Anicet , where the family also had a second home. His father Louis G. Bouchard, what leather goods supplier. Bouchard first attended the Collège Jean-De-Brébeuf, later he studied at the Université de Montréal, where he obtained a degree in biology. He then attended McGill University and Cornell University and finished his studies in the late 1970s.

In 1975 Bouchard began teaching at the Université de Montréal and became curator of the Montreal Botanical Garden. He stayed at the university until his death and at the Botanical Garden for 21 years. As a curator, he mainly directed research on the garden. Bouchard studied the flora of Newfoundland ( Gros Morne National Park was the subject of his doctoral thesis) and southwestern Quebec. His investigations into the development of the forest in Quebec since the time of New France led to new insights into the development of beech - maple forests.

In addition to his scientific work, Bouchard was also known for his commitment to environmental protection. He was committed to saving the Bois de Saraguay, a primary forest in the north of the Île de Montréal . In the course of time he became involved in other forests, such as the Boisé du Tremblay in Longueuil , the Muir Forest in Hichinbrooke (today Réserve écologique du Boisé-des-Muir ) and Little and Large Tea Field, two peat bogs in Saint-Anicet. In 2004 he was a member of the Coulombe Commission, whose report defined the principles of the province's forest management policy. Although he and his fellow commissioner knew they would be criticized by the industry for the recommendations (which included reducing tree felling by 20%), he believed the decision was correct.

Bouchard worked with Pierre Bourque and became director of the Botanical Garden in 1994 after he gave up his post due to his election as mayor. He only held the office for a short time, both because he had informed the administration that he would only hold it on an interim basis and because he was not satisfied with the complicated administrative apparatus associated with the position. In 2002 he became the first director of the newly established Institut de Recherche en Biology Végétale. He held the position until 2006. During that time, Bouchard continued to work at the university, where he supervised over 45 masters and doctoral students. From 2006 to 2008 he was a member of the Montreal Heritage Council of the Supervisory Board of the Center hospitalier universitaire Sainte-Justine and received prizes from the Quebec Association of Biologists (Georges Préfontaine Prize, 2005) and the Acfas (Michel Jurdant Prize for Environmental Protection, 1990 ).

Bouchard was also interested in local and scientific history. In 1998 he published a short historical report on the Botanical Garden and in 2007 a compendium of the correspondence of Marie-Victorin Kirouac . At the time of his death, he was working on books on the wetlands of southern Quebec and a biography on Marie-Victorin. As an admirer of Marie-Victorin, he had traced his expeditions to Cuba and organized an exhibition on the subject. He was a member of the local history association of Saint-Anicet and wrote reports on prominent locals such as Jules and Paul-Émile Léger . Bouchard also contributed to two books on the local church and the ward.

Bouchard died unexpectedly of a myocardial infarction in Montreal's Gare Centrale on March 4, 2010 , a few months before his planned retreat. Bourque gave condolences and the flags of the Botanical Gardens were hoisted at half mast for several days . Bouchard was married and had three children. In June of the same year he was posthumously awarded the Honoris causa of the Laval University .

Remarks

  1. His dissertation dates from 1975, in the same year he became curator of the Montreal Botanical Garden.
  2. He would say it was "like a quick doctorate in political science."
  3. About this stay a member of the council remarked: "He taught us that advice that doesn't annoy is useless advice."
