André Gros

André Gros (born May 19, 1908 in Douai ; † April 22, 2003 ) was a French legal scholar who worked in the field of international law . He taught at the University of Rio de Janeiro and at the École nationale d'administration and was a judge on the International Court of Justice from 1964 to 1982 .

Life

André Gros was born in 1908 as the son of a public prosecutor in Douai in northern France. After attending school in Bourges , he studied law in Lyon and Paris . In 1931 Gros became a lecturer at the University of Paris before he was appointed associate professor in Nancy in 1935 and in Toulouse in 1937 . After his habilitation in 1938, Gros taught political science at the University of Rio de Janeiro (1939 and 1940–1942), at the École nationale d'administration (1947–1949 and 1952) and at the Hague Academy for International Law (1959).

He was also active as a diplomat . From 1939 he worked for the French Foreign Ministry, where he held various positions. From 1940 he was legal advisor to the French Embassy in London , from 1943 to 1948 a representative at the United Nations War Crimes Commission , in 1946 legal advisor to the French delegation to the Paris Peace Conference in 1946 and from 1947 to 1963 legal advisor to the French Foreign Ministry. From 1950 Gros was a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague and from 1961 to 1963 of the United Nations International Law Commission , of which he was appointed first chairman in 1962. Two years later he was elected judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague and in 1973 was confirmed in that office for a further nine years. From 1971 to 1977 he also served as a member of the court of arbitration in the Beagle conflict .

André Gros was married in 1940 and has two sons. He died in 2003.

Awards

André Gros was inducted into the French Legion of Honor for his services as a commander and was appointed Honorary Bencher (appointed senior member) of the English Bar Association of Inner Temple . From 1959 he was a member of the Institut de Droit international , whose 59th session , which took place in Athens in 1979, he chaired as president. The American Society for International Law awarded him honorary membership in 1983.
