André Marfaing

André Marfaing (born December 11, 1925 in Toulouse , France , † March 30, 1987 in Paris ) was a French painter and graphic artist .

He is one of the most important representatives of abstract art and printmaking after the Second World War .

Life

André Marfaing originally studied law before he found painting. He moved to Paris in 1949 and exhibited in the 1st Salon of Young Painters from 1950 onwards . Parallel to his painting, he has created extensive graphic works with a preference for etchings , but also collages and ink drawings . He lived in Saint-Jean-de-Luz for a long time .

The characteristic of André Marfaing's work is the dominance of the color black . Almost all of his works are in black and white, there are hardly any other colors. " The light touches me more than the color ." (André Marfaing)

His work received great attention in the 1950s and 1960s. He was a participant in documenta 2 in Kassel in 1959 in the painting department and also in the Venice Biennale in 1961.
