André Morell

André Morell (born August 20, 1909 in London ; † November 28, 1978 there ; actually André Mesritz ) was a British actor .

Life

André Morell, son of a Dutch father and a British mother, made his acting debut in film in 1938 after having worked as a touring actor for several years. Also in 1938 Morrell was signed to the Old Vic Theater and went to the Royal Welch Fusiliers during World War II , where he achieved the rank of major. It was only after his return from World War II that his acting career took off. On the stage, the renowned Shakespeare actor played both Timon of Athens and Hamlet .

The actor has been on screen in renowned projects since the 1950s, for example as the military commander in David Lean's Die Brücke am Kwai (1957) alongside Alec Guinness and William Holden and as Sextus in William Wyler's Ben Hur (1959) at the side by Charlton Heston . The distinguished-looking Morell also appeared in a total of nine films by Hammer Studios , including as Doctor Watson in The Dog of Baskerville (1959) and in the zombie flick, Nights of Horror . His late cinema roles include an appearance in Stanley Kubrick's classic film Barry Lyndon (1975) and the voice of Elrond in the fantasy cartoon The Lord of the Rings (1978). For television, Morell played alongside Peter Cushing in a version of George Orwell's novel 1984, the sinister O'Brien .

André Morell died of lung cancer in 1978 at the age of 69. He was married to film actress Joan Greenwood from 1960 until his death . The two have a son, actor Jason Morell .
