The tug Andreas is the largest still functional steam tug with a triple expansion steam engine in Europe.

The tugboat has its home port in the museum harbor on Fischerinsel in the center of Berlin . It belongs to a collection of historical inland waterway vessels of the association “Berlin-Brandenburgische Schifffahrtsgesellschaft e. V. ".

History of the ship

The hull was completed in 1944 at the Wiemann shipyard . A diesel engine was provided as the drive, which was destroyed by the effects of the war. The new building remained in the shipyard without a drive. The steam engine, which had been in storage for a long time at the shipyard, was not installed until 1950. The tugboat was mainly used on the Elbe between Niegripp and Magdeburg . Operations on the Saale between Barby and Halle were also carried out. In the 1960s it was also used in the canal area between Niegripp and Nedlitz and Hohensaaten and Fürstenberg . In 1970 the steamer Andreas was taken out of service and permanently stationed in Rummelsburger See . There the ship was used as a heating plant for an office building of the Elektroapparatewerkes Treptow and was thus able to avoid the fate of many tugboats, which was scrapped. In September 1991 the Berliner Schifffahrtsgesellschaft acquired the ship and put it back into working order. In the summer season he is used for excursions and for traditional steamboat events.
