Andreas E. Furtwängler

Andreas Ernst Gottfried Furtwängler (born November 11, 1944 in Zurich ) is a German classical archaeologist and numismatist .

Furtwängler received his doctorate in 1973 at the University of Heidelberg with a thesis on Greek numismatics supervised by Herbert A. Cahn and worked from 1976–1981 as a consultant at the German Archaeological Institute, Athens Department , then at the Archaeological Institute of the University of Saarbrücken . In 1991 he received his habilitation there . From 1994 until his retirement in 2010 he was Professor of Classical Archeology at the University of Halle .

From 1993 to 2003 he carried out excavations and surveys in Georgia; since 2002 he has been digging in the sanctuary of Didyma . Furtwängler is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .

Andreas E. Furtwängler is the son of Elisabeth Furtwängler and the conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler and a grandson of the archaeologist Adolf Furtwängler . He is married and has three children.
