Andreas Gärtner

Andreas Gärtner ( Upper Sorbian Handrij Zahrodnik , born December 24, 1654 in Quatitz , Upper Lusatia ; † February 2, 1727 in Dresden ) was an electoral Saxon model master in Dresden, natural scientist and inventor.

Life

Gardener learned the trade of carpenter. After studying in Bologna, he went to Dresden around 1686, continued his education and became a court mechanic and model master at the Dresden court around 1694. In addition to model making, he also dealt with technology and astronomy.

Around 1700 he created a world clock for August the Strong , which can still be seen today in the Mathematical-Physical Salon in the Dresden Zwinger . Andreas Gärtner was revered by his contemporaries as the "Saxon Archimedes". At the beginning of 1715 Gärtner appeared as an opponent of the advocates of Bessler's perpetual motion machine and got into a bet.

He was related to the court model maker Johann Gärtner and Johann Andreas Gärtner . Gärtner's grave was in the Johanniskirchhof , it has not been preserved.

Inventions

His most famous inventions include:

  • The world time clock (around 1700) with its 360 small dials on 360 meridians, which can still be seen today in the Dresden Zwinger. It has a height of 238 cm, width 149 cm, depth 67 cm. Material: wood, iron, paper
  • A lighting mirror (made around 1710), height 162 cm, material: wood, sheet metal and glass
  • Healing or Curier mirror (around 1710), 166 cm high, material: wood, plaster, gold leaf

  • A water art that carried water over 16 m upwards
  • A 3-story elevator that the Russian Tsar was interested in

Honors

Monument to Andreas Gärtner and Otto Lehmann in Quatitz
  • The Andreas-Gärtner-Weg in Quatitz was named after him.
  • In the 1980s there was a granite memorial in front of the school in Quatitz with plaques in honor of Andreas Gärtner and Otto Lehmann. However, this was later removed.
  • On June 16, 2007, the restored monument to Handrij Zahrodnik / Andreas Gärtner (1654–1727) and Ota Wićaz / Otto Lehmann (1874–1952) was inaugurated in Quatitz, the initiator of the restoration was the "Club of Nature and Homeland Friends Quatitz" . The new location is now in the center of the village, at the building of the volunteer fire brigade.
