The 56-year-old perpetrator put a knife about 30 centimeters long against Hollstein's neck and injured him there. The owner of the shop and his son overpowered the drunk attacker, who had loudly disparaged Hollstein's liberal refugee policy. Andreas Hollstein was taken to the hospital in an ambulance, but was soon released again. "I had hands-on people by my side and I am glad that I am still alive," said Hollstein on the same day on the news site "Lokalstimme.de".

In an initial statement, the investigating authorities considered a political motive to be likely.

On March 21, 2018, the public prosecutor brought charges against the alleged perpetrator. The District Court Hagen sentenced the perpetrators on 11 June 2018 for aggravated assault and kidnapping with a threat to two years' imprisonment , which the probation was suspended.

politics

In October 2015, a firefighter and an accomplice in the Altena arson attack set fire to a house in which several migrant families lived. As a motive, the man stated that he was afraid of "break-ins, theft, acts of violence and also sexual assault" by the refugees. The district court of Hagen sentenced him to six years imprisonment for serious arson and his acquaintances to a five-year prison term.

Hollstein and his city administration initiated that the 18,000-inhabitant city of Altena in the Sauerland took in more refugees from 2015 than was prescribed by the municipal distribution quota. Hollstein is co-author of the book Mein Kampf - gegen Rechts , published in 2016 , in which eleven people report how they were confronted with right-wing extremist ideas and right-wing extremist violence from their position and how they stood up against it.

In an interview, Hollstein explains about the integration of refugees to be admitted:

“We have been using the concept for ourselves, for three or four years actually, that we no longer have any refugee homes, but only rented empty living space where we accommodate in residential groups. Since the beginning of last year the numbers have soared, we have only been accommodating people in decentralized apartments and not in apartments next to each other, so that in principle we are forcing the local population and those new to us to enter into a dialogue with one another and not avoid this dialogue because of the language. In our opinion, this does not create parallel societies , but rather we have to come to terms with one another. "

In May 2017, Altena received the National Integration Award 2017 from Chancellor Angela Merkel . "I think we will get Germany led into a good future - and it is colorful," said Hollstein at the time. In September 2018 he became the Europe Prize Winner of the UNHCR's Nansen Refugee Prize.

According to Hollstein's testimony, he repeatedly received death threats after the assassination attempt, including after the arrest of a suspected right-wing extremist in the course of the investigation into the murder of the Kassel District President Walter Lübcke in June 2019.
