Athletic career

Roth began his football career in the youth department of the company sports association (BSG) Chemie Leipzig. At the age of 16, he moved to Leipzig's top club 1. FC Lok Leipzig in 1972, where he initially played in the junior league. In the same year he was nominated for the junior national team. He played his first international junior match on November 25, 1972 in the Soviet Union - GDR (2-1) match as a substitute. In his total of 30 international matches, which he completed with the junior selection until 1974, he was usually used as a left defender. In 1973 he was with the GDR juniors after a 2: 3 against England second in the UEFA youth tournament, the unofficial junior European championship. In 1974, playing in defense, he became champion of the junior league with 1. FC Lok . During his time as a junior player, Roth completed an apprenticeship as a toolmaker.

Roth made his debut in the GDR league on October 19, 1974, when he was substituted on in the 73rd minute of the match on the 9th day of the match between BFC Dynamo and 1. FC Lok (3: 1). In his first league season 1974/75 he came to a total of 13 first division appearances, including six games that he completed over the full season, each as a defender. On September 24, 1974, Roth had already played his first international match with the youth national team. In the game DDR-U-21 - Czechoslovakia (1: 1) he played in the central midfield. As a young international player, Roth made 40 international matches in which he scored two goals. In 1978 he became vice-European champion with the youth team after 0: 1 and 4: 4 against Yugoslavia.

In his second league season in 1975/76, the 1.75 m tall Roth already made 23 appearances, but was now mainly called up in midfield. Already here it became clear that he could be used in a variety of ways, because throughout the year he played repeatedly in different positions, a quality that characterized him over long stretches of his career. At the end of his second league year he was able to celebrate his first success in the men's division. On May 1st, 1976 he won the final of the GDR soccer cup with 1. FC Lok . In the 3-0 win over forward Frankfurt he was the left midfielder and scored the goal for the 3-0 final score. Two weeks later, on May 19, 1976, Roth played his only international B match. In the encounter between GDR and Cuba (3-1) he was used as a right midfielder. In the following years he was a regular player for the Leipzig team without any lengthy failures, commuting between midfield and defense. After a weaker season 1979/80 with only 17 league league games, Roth had his most successful league season in 1980/81. This time only in midfield, but there on the right and left as well as in the center, he was only missing in one encounter. He ended the season with his second cup win. On June 7, 1981 he was the central midfielder in the repetition of the 1976 cup final 1. FC Lok - Forward Frankfurt, which Leipzig won this time 4-1. In 1981/82 Roth achieved his best league final placement with 1. FC Lok with third place. From matchday 12 on, it had appeared as if coach Harro Miller had found a final position for Roth, as he played as a right defender in the following 13 missions. In this position he was used in the first two games of the 1982/83 season, but after that he was only used twice due to injury until the end of the season. Then Roth left 1. FC Lok Leipzig after 168 league games (8 goals), 37 national cup games (5 goals) and six appearances in European cups (without scoring).

In the 1983/84 season Roth played for the league promoted chemistry Leipzig. After a less than successful first series with only six appearances in the league team, he gained a foothold in his new team as a left defender with all 13 point games in the second half of the season. In the following season 1984/85 he was haunted by lengthy injuries, so that he was only used seven times in the league. At the end of the season, Roth completed his league career and moved to the second-rate GDR league club Wismut Gera for the 1985/86 season . There he finally ended his career as a football player in the performance area in 1987.
