Andreas Seidl (1760-1834)

Andreas Seidl (* 1760 in Munich , † 1834 ) was a Bavarian history painter of Classicism . The son of Hofkistler Joseph Seidl was initially a student of the electoral court builder and copper engraver Karl Albert von Lespilliez , whose most famous work is the Palais Gise in Munich. Later he shifted his training focus rather to oil painting and received lessons from Franz Ignaz Oefele , the then artistic director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Equipped with an electoral scholarship, he traveled to Italy for further training in 1781, where he stayed until 1788. There he received the prize of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome , where he was a member as well as at the academies of Parma and Bologna .

Back in Munich he was given the post of electoral court painter and was appointed professor in 1796 in Oefele's position . From this point on he devoted himself mainly to teaching and less to painting. Eight years after his retirement he died in 1834, some sources also mention 1836 as the year Seidl died.

His most famous works still preserved today are located in sacred buildings. Mention should be made of the oil paintings in the sacristy of St. Peter in Munich, the altar sheet "Dream of St. Joseph " in the old parish church of the Munich district of Haidhausen and the painting and some altar sheets in the parish church of St. Nikolaus in Altfraunhofen in Lower Bavaria .
