Andreas Wesling , also: Wißling, Wissling, Wisling, Wessel, Weslingus (* Osnabrück ; † January 4, 1577 in Rostock ) was a German philologist and Protestant theologian.

Life

Andreas Wesling was the son of Johannes Wessel. He had studied at the University of Cologne , where he obtained a master's degree. On November 15, 1540 he moved to the University of Wittenberg , where he was appointed to the senate of the philosophical faculty of the Wittenberg University on April 7, 1545. During this time he had the opportunity to familiarize himself with the ideas of Philipp Melanchthon and Martin Luther . At the end of 1546 he went to the University of Königsberg , where he became a professor of the Greek language. In Königsberg he established himself as an opponent of Andreas Osiander and was therefore dismissed from this employment relationship at the beginning of 1551. Wesling returned to Wittenberg, where he became dean of the philosophical faculty in the winter semester of 1551/52. In July 1553 he went to Rostock University as a professor of the Hebrew language .

In 1556 he stayed again in Wittenberg, where he was ordained on April 8 for a preaching office in Rostock. In Rostock, despite his advanced age, he worked with youthful freshness and strength for the university to prosper. In Rostock he appeared as dean of the philosophical faculty in the summer semesters 1566, 1568, 1572 and 1576. He made particular merits in Rostock when he promoted the neglected studies of Hebrew language studies and established them as a necessary link in theological sciences. So the Old Testament studies could also be carried out in Rostock. Therefore, he continued to support the students after his death by setting up a scholarship for three students. Johann Freder built an epitaph for him.
