Andreas room

Andreas Zimmer (* 1957 in Nuremberg ) is a German diplomat who was ambassador to Eritrea between 2014 and 2018 . Since 2018 he has been responsible for the diplomatic corps in Germany in the Foreign Office .

Life

Zimmer graduated from high school in Bad Bergzabern in 1977 . Between 1977 and 1979 he did his military service in the Bundeswehr , where he also trained as a reserve officer and was most recently promoted to lieutenant colonel in the reserve . In 1979 he began studying law at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , which he completed in 1985. He then completed postgraduate studies at Stockholm University , which he finished in 1987. During the ensuing legal traineeship between 1987 and 1989 took place in 1988 his doctorate to Dr. jur. at the University of Mainz with a dissertation on the subject of peace treaties in international law .

In 1990 he began the preparatory service for the higher foreign service and, after graduating, joined the Foreign Office in 1991 . After being employed at the embassy in Indonesia from 1992 to 1995 , Zimmer was permanent representative of the head of the Consulate General in Wroclaw between 1995 and 1999 and then again at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Berlin between 1998 and 2002. In 2002 he became permanent representative of the head of the Consulate General in Atlanta and after his return to Germany between 2005 and 2006 first deputy head of a department and then from 2006 to 2008 head of a work unit in the Foreign Office. After working at the Consulate General in New York City between 2008 and 2011 , he took on the role of Head of Salaries at the Federal Foreign Office from 2011 to 2014.

In July 2014, Zimmer became the Federal Republic of Germany's ambassador to Eritrea, succeeding Viktor Richter , who in turn became head of the Consulate General in Novosibirsk . In 2018, Zimmer was replaced by Gerald Wolf and has since been responsible for looking after the diplomatic corps in Germany at the Foreign Office.
