Viktor Richter

Viktor Richter (* 1958 ) is a German diplomat who was ambassador to Eritrea from July 2012 to July 2014 .

Life

After graduating from high school , Richter began studying political science and international relations and graduated in 1985. He then joined the Foreign Service of the GDR and was initially employed in the Central Africa section of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the GDR , before becoming an attaché for press, culture and consular affairs at the GDR embassy in the People's Republic of Congo between 1988 and 1990 .

After German reunification , he left the diplomatic service and between 1991 and 1992 worked in the private sector at the French company Bret SA in Verneuil-sur-Avre .

In 1993 he joined the Foreign Service of the Federal Republic of Germany and was initially employed as a consultant for cultural relations with Asia at the Foreign Office in Bonn , before he worked as a consultant for press, culture, law and consular matters at the embassy in Malaysia between 1995 and 1998 . Subsequently, he was First Secretary of the Political Department at the Embassy in Russia and then from 2002 to 2004 Advisor for the South Caucasus in the Political Department of the Foreign Office in Berlin .

Richter then returned to the embassy in Russia in 2004, where he was Deputy Head of the Economic Service and then, between 2005 and 2007, political advisor to the EU Special Representative in Central Asia and head of its regional office in Almaty . In 2007 he became head of the unit for relations between the European Union (EU) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in the Foreign Office and then worked again at the embassy in Russia from 2009 to 2012, this time as head of the press department.

In July 2012 Viktor Richter succeeded Klaus Peter Schick as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Eritrea . He held this position until July 2014 and was then replaced by Andreas Zimmer , who was previously head of the salary department at the Foreign Office.

Richter, in turn, became head of the Consulate General in Novosibirsk in July 2014 .
