Andro Charles Willem Knel (born October 8, 1967 in Rotterdam , † June 7, 1989 in Zanderij ) was a Dutch football player ; his father was Surinamese and his mother Dutch .

Knel grew up first in Rotterdam and since 1977 in The Hague, where he played youth teams from HMSH, DWO, ADO and FC Den Haag . The attacking midfielder made his breakthrough at the age of 19 after returning to Rotterdam in 1986: he made 44 appearances in the Eredivisie for Sparta Rotterdam and scored one goal. In the winter break of 1988/89 he moved to NAC Breda , for which he also scored a goal in 19 league games. On June 7, 1989 he flew with the Kleurrijk Elftal , a selection of Dutch-Surinamese players, to a planned friendship tournament in Paramaribo . The Surinam Airways Flight 764 crashed on landing, Knel and 14 other members of the team were among the 176 victims.

Knel was popular with fans; he liked to listen to reggae music and with his dreadlocks he resembled his compatriot Ruud Gullit . Knel's death brought Sparta and NAC supporters closer together. Since 2005, teams from both fan groups have been playing in the league for Andro Knel Bokaal before the official matches between the two teams . On April 7, 2017 , a portrait of Knels was unveiled in the Rat Verlegh Stadium of NAC Breda, below the grandstand.
