Andronikos V. Palaiologos ( Middle Greek Ἀνδρόνικος Εʹ Παλαιολόγος ; * around 1400 probably in Constantinople ; † around 1407 probably in Thessaloniki ) was a Byzantine co-emperor since 1403/04 .

Life

Andronikos was the only known son of Emperor John VII Palaiologos and his wife Irene Palaiologina Gattilusaina , a daughter of Francesco II Gattilusio of Lesbos . At birth, the child was John VII. Regent in Constantinople Opel for Emperor Manuel II. , Who on a multi-year trip abroad in the European princes for help in the fight against the Ottoman Sultan I. Bayezid advertised. After Bayezid's defeat in the battle of Ankara on July 20, 1402 against the Turko-Mongols under Timur , Manuel II returned from Paris to Constantinople, where he probably arrived again in 1403.

Andronikos' father, John VII, was deposed as regent, but retained the imperial dignity and, after a brief exile on Lemnos, was assigned Thessaloniki, which had been regained in the Ottoman Interregnum for Byzantium, as an appanage. Shortly after the family's arrival in late 1403 or early 1404, the young Andronikos was officially proclaimed co-emperor (symbasileus) there. This was a purely honorary title that was not linked to any powers. Andronikos died about a year before his father († September 22, 1408) at the age of only seven, as a monody written on his death attests.
