Andrzej Sosnowski, with the pseudonym Earthling, Mikołaj Siwecki, Andrzej Ziemiańczyk and Andrzej Ziemiański (born May 29, 1959 in Warsaw ), is a Polish poet , literary critic , essayist and translator .

Life

Sosnowski was born in Warsaw in 1959. His maternal grandfather was the author, editor and translator Władysław Kozłowski .

After graduating from high school in 1978, Sosnowski began studying English at the University of Warsaw , where he received his master's degree in 1984 and worked as a research assistant at the Institute for English Philology at the University of Warsaw. In 1986 he made his debut as a poet with the poems Agonia, Poranek niedzielny , which were published in the journal Powściągliwość i Praca . In 1987 he made his debut as a translator and literary critic with the annotated translation of poems by Ezra Pound , which was published in the Literatura na Świecie .

In 1989 he traveled to Canada for three years , where he collected materials for his doctoral thesis on the work of Ezra Pound at the University of Western Ontario . In the following years he continued his research, but did not complete his doctoral thesis.

In 1992 he returned to Warsaw and from 1993 worked as an editor for the Literatura na Świecie , where he initially published mainly translations from English and later also from French.

From 1995 to 2005 he gave seminars on American poetry of the 20th century at the University of Warsaw.

In 1997 he received the Kościelski Prize for his complete works. In 1999 he became a member of the Polish PEN Club .

From 1988 to 2016 he published poems, reviews, prose and translations in the magazines Akcent , Twórczość , Literatura na Świecie , Odra , Kresy , Czas Kultury , Res Publica Nowa , Tygodnik Powszechny , Arkusz , Nowe Książki , Bliza and Opowiadanie .

In 2011 he was awarded the individual prize of the Gdynia Literature Prize and in 2017 he received the Wroclaw Silesius Poetry Prize for his complete works.

He lives in Warsaw.
