Peter Gizzi
Peter Gizzi (born August 7, 1959 in Alma , Michigan , USA ) is an American author , university professor and publisher .
Life
Gizzi spent most of his childhood and youth in Pittsfield, Massachusetts . After graduating from high school , he first went to a cable factory as a worker and then to a home for behavioral youth. During the night watch he dealt with literature and read, among other things, everything that the "Burning Deck Press" had published . He began his studies at Brown University in Providence , Rhode Island . In the 1980s he lived in New York City , where he studied at New York University . He worked as a waiter, read a lot and, inspired by a reprint from Blast , published his own magazine o * blék: a journal of language arts , which he founded in 1987 together with Conell McGrath .
In 1991 Gizzi began editing Jack Spicer's lectures . In the same year he was able to work at the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY) in Buffalo , New York , with the help of Robert Creeley , Charles Bernstein and Susan Howe . In 1993, after eight years and twelve issues, he left o * blék , which ceased publication shortly afterwards.
Gizzi taught at his alma mater and at the University of California, Santa Cruz . From 2001 onwards, he was Professor of the MFA Program for Poets and Writers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst . He was the poetry editor of The Nation magazine .
Today Gizzi is editor and on the board of directors of the New York literary magazine Conjunctions . He is the brother of the late poet Michael Gizzi .
