Andrzej Straszyński

Andrzej Straszyński (* 1944 in Warsaw ) is a Polish conductor.

Straszyński studied violin with Irena Dubiska and conducting with Stanisław Wisłocki at the Warsaw Music Academy . Since the end of his training he has been the conductor of the Teatr Wielki's opera stage , and from 1991 to 1994 he was also its artistic director. The works he performed here include Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti , Macbeth and Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi , La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini , Manru by Ignacy Jan Paderewski , I Capuleti ei Montecchi by Vincenzo Bellini , The Barber of Seville by Gioachino Rossini , Salome by Richard Strauss , Paradise Lost by Krzysztof Penderecki and Faust by Charles Gounod .

He has also conducted at the Kraków, Łódź and Poznan Opera Houses and in 2005 conducted a performance of Léo Delibes Lakmé at the Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz . Singers such as Irina Archipowa , Katia Ricciarelli , Stefania Toczyska , Lucia Valentini-Terrani , Teresa Żylis-Gara , Placido Domingo , Nicolai Gedda , Leo Nucci , Ruggiero Raimondi and Martti Talvela performed under his direction .

As a conductor of symphony orchestras, Straszyński has performed in Brussels, Geneva, Copenhagen, Luxembourg, Paris, Beijing, St. Petersburg, Rome, Seoul, Tokyo, Vienna, Buenos Aires, Bucharest, Montevideo and Salzburg and has accompanied soloists such as Peter Donohoe and Jean Fournier , Benedetto Lupo , Mischa Maisky , Garrick Ohlsson and Grigori Sokolow . In the field of ballet he worked with the choreographers Maurice Béjart , Valentin Jelizariew , Teresa Kujawa , Hans van Manen and Yuriko , among others . In 2013 he was awarded the Golden Gloria Artis Medal for cultural merit .
