Maria Andrzej Zawada [ ˈandʐɛj zaˈvada ] (born July 16, 1928 in Olsztyn ; † August 21, 2000 in Warsaw ) was a Polish mountaineer , Tatra mountaineer and trained seismologist . He organized and led numerous Himalayan and Tatra expeditions. He was also the author of many mountain films and books (e.g. Last Attack on the Kunyang Chhish , 1973). He was a grandson of Tomasz Rawicz-Zawada, a participant in the January uprising of 1863.

Expeditions

In 1959 Zawada was the guide of the first winter crossing of the High Tatras , which lasted 19 days. In 1971 he led the first Polish expedition to Khunyang Chish (7852 m) in Karakorum . With Tadeusz Piotrowski he managed the first winter ascent of the Noshak (7492 m) in the Hindu Kush (1973). It was the world's first winter ascent of a summit over 7000 m. In 1977 Zawada succeeded in the first ascent of the north face of Koh-i Mandara (6628 m).

In 1980 Krzysztof Wielicki and Leszek Cichy managed the first winter ascent of Mount Everest (8,848 m) under the direction of Zawada. In the winter of 1984/85 he participated in the Polish Cho Oyu expedition with Andrzej Heinrich and Jerzy Kukuczka . At the turn of 1987/88 he led the first Canadian-Polish winter expedition to K2 .
