Angèle Manteau

Angèle Georgette Ghislaine Manteau (born January 24, 1911 in Dinant ; died April 20, 2008 in Aalst ) was a Belgian publisher.

Life

Angèle Manteau's father was a textile manufacturer from Lille , her mother was from Belgium. She studied chemistry for a few semesters at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). In Brussels she made the acquaintance of the writers Jan Greshoff and Aty Brunt and learned the Dutch language. Manteau worked for a publishing company and started her own import trading business in 1932. In 1938 she founded the Manteau publishing house in Brussels .

Piet van Aken , Louis Paul Boon , Hugo Claus , Johan Daisne , Dirk De Witte , Jef Geeraerts , Hubert Lampo , Ward Ruyslinck , Paul Snoek , Herman Teirlinck , Karel van de Woestijne , Jos Vandeloo , August Vermeylen .

Since 1964 she has been assisted in managing the publishing house by the writer Jeroen Brouwers . At the end of the 1970s she left the publishing house, which was continued by Julien Weverbergh , and went to the Elsevier publishing house in Amsterdam .

In the early 1980s she translated works by Emmanuel Bove and Françoise Sagan into Dutch.

Manteau was made a baroness in Belgium in 1986 and accepted into the Dutch Order of Orange-Nassau . In 2003 she was awarded the Golden Pfennig by the Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique .
