Angelo Portelli OP (born April 24, 1852 in Valletta , Malta as Francis Xavier Portelli , † June 19, 1927 ibid) was a Maltese Roman Catholic religious and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Malta .

Life

He was the son of Francesco Portelli and his wife Maria Antonia Vella. On February 3, 1868 he made his profession in the Maltese mother house in Notabile ( Maltese Mdina ) and was accepted into the Dominican order under the religious name Angelo . After studying philosophy and theology in Notabile, he was ordained a priest for his order in 1874 . As a lecturer at the St. Thomas von Aquin College in Notabile, he taught theology and scriptural interpretation from 1876–1882 and 1885–1892, among other things . From 1887 to 1892 he was a novice master. The Dominican Convent of Vittoriosa elected him prior in 1883 , but he resigned after a short time to pursue his teaching activities. He belonged to the convent in Vittoriosa and was its chaplain from 1896 to 1902 . In 1902 he was appointed visitor of the women's orders on the islands of Malta and Gozo .

Pope Pius X appointed him on March 31, 1911 titular bishop of Selinus and auxiliary bishop in Malta. He received his episcopal consecration on May 14th of the same year by the Bishop of Malta, Archbishop Pietro Pace ; Co- consecrators were Luigi Bignami , Archbishop of Syracuse , and Giovanni Battista Arista-Vigo CO , Bishop of Acireale . After the death of Archbishop Pietro Pace in 1914, Angelo Portelli served as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Malta until Mauro Caruana OSB was appointed diocesan bishop on January 22, 1915 . In the same year Angelo Portelli was appointed vicar general by Archbishop Caruana .

Angelo Portelli died in his home near the Dominican Priory of Valletta and was buried in the Church of Our Lady of the Grotto in Rabat .
