history

The river was named in 1887 by Robert McPhee , a prospector in the area, after Colonel Fox Angelo , a government official in Roebourne and later superintendent of Rottnest Island .

The Aborigines of the Ngarlawongga and Banjima tribes have dream time songs about the origin of the black river goannas that are believed to have originated in this river. The black- headed python ( Aspidites melanocephalus ) is said to have originated in the tributary Indabiddy Creek .
