Angurugu is an Aboriginal settlement on the island of Groote Eylandt , which is about 50 kilometers from Arnhem Land in the Gulf of Carpentaria and belongs to the Australian Northern Territory . The settlement is located about in the middle of the west coast of Groote Eylandt, six kilometers upstream of the Anuguru River and about one kilometer from the airport. Darwin is about 650 kilometers to the east and the mainland coast is about 50 kilometers away.
In 1964 the mining of one of the largest manganese ore deposits on earth began near Angurugu, with an annual production of over three million tons. The mine is operated by GEMCO (Groote Eylandt Mining Company Pty Ltd.), a joint venture between Anglo American and BHP Billiton , which hold 40 and 60 percent of the company shares, respectively. The mining company employs numerous local Aborigines.
The entire Groote Eylandt archipelago was declared an Indigenous Protected Area in 2006 . 97% of the local population are Aborigines.
The village has a school with 19 full-time teachers and the Angurugu Health Center .
Anindilyakwa
The Anindilyakwa Aboriginal tribe consists of 14 clans. They speak their own language Anindilyakwa and English. Some of them also speak Yolngu Matha . A permit from East Arnhem Shire is required to travel to Angurugu . The life and culture of this Aboriginal tribe was the subject of the 1948 Arnhem Land Expedition led by Charles Mountford .
