Angus Konstam (born January 2, 1960 in Aberdeen ) is a Scottish author and historian.

Life

Angus Konstam, son of Sheila and Peter Konstam , spent his childhood in the Orkney Islands . In 1978 he left the islands and joined the Royal Navy . He received a scholarship to the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth . This study was followed by a history degree at the University of Aberdeen . After successfully completing this too, he returned to the Royal Navy and went to sea for a year. During this time he gained experience not only in the military, but also in the field of customs and habits of seafarers and navigation. Upon his return, he took up his Masters degree at the University of St Andrews . It was during this course that Konstam first came into contact with underwater archeology .

Career

England

After completing his studies, Konstam worked from 1985 on an excavation on the Thames near the Tower of London . An exchange of exhibits between the Tower and the Kremlin gave Konstam the opportunity to study 18th-century Russian military history. In the course of this he met a historian who was looking for an author for a book about the army of Peter the Great on behalf of the publishing house Osprey Publishing . Konstam received the contract and published two books on the subject in 1993.

United States

Konstam moved to Key West , Florida in 1995 to accept the post of Chief Curator of the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Museum . His tasks included setting up a traveling exhibition . The work also sparked his interest in the history of piracy in the 18th century. During his six years as curator of the museum, he wrote numerous books, including The History of Pirates (2002) , which sold over 70,000 times.

Current work

After returning to the UK in 2001, he moved to Edinburgh , where he still lives today. The focus of his work as an author is on the 16th and 17th centuries. Konstam is a member of the Society of Authors .
