Anja Ignatius ( Anja Hirvensalo , born July 2, 1911 in Tampere , † April 10, 1995 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish violinist and music teacher.

Ignatius had violin lessons from the age of five, first with Ilmari Weneskoski and Gennaro Romano , from 1925 at the Conservatoire de Paris and from 1927 to 1929 with Otakar Ševčík . On the mediation of Bruno Walter she finally completed a postgraduate course with Carl Flesch in Berlin.

Ignatius made her violin debut in Helsinki in 1926. In 1930 she performed in Berlin with Giuseppe Tartini's Devil's Trill Sonata and selected pieces by Jean Sibelius . In the same year she played Sibelius' Violin Concerto for the Swedish Radio , and the composer himself gave her advice on how to perform it. 1938-39 Ignatius went on a concert tour through the USA with the Boston Symphony Orchestra , in January 1943 she played a recording of Sibelius 'Violin Concerto with the Berlin City Orchestra, conducted by Sibelius' brother-in-law Armas Järnefelt .

Ignatius led the Helsinki Quartet from 1953 to 1961 . From 1955 to 1978 she was professor of violin at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. In 1958 she played the Finnish premiere of Alban Berg's Violin Concerto . In 1978 she was awarded the State Prize for Music Art.
