It was surrounded by the neighboring communities of Pena, São Jorge de Arroios , Penha de França, Graça , Santiago and Socorro. 9,766 inhabitants lived in the 0.49 km² community (as of June 30, 2011).

history

In 1147 the parishes of Santa Justa and Rufina were founded in the area of Anjos. In the 16th century Santa Justa was divided into the parishes of Anjos, Arroios, Pena, São José, São Sebastiao da Pedreira and Socorro. In the city archives there are records of a parish in Anjos 1564/69. The parish church was the previous chapel of Os Santos Anjos ( the Holy Angel ), which gave the community its name.

The Lisbon earthquake in 1755 also caused enormous devastation in Anjos. Many new streets were built during the reconstruction. Raiders were executed in Santa Barbara Square. The square that used to be called Largo das Fontainhas still exists today. From this “place of the fountains” springs supplied the irrigation of the surrounding fields.

At the end of the 19th century, the construction of new districts began: Andrade, Inglaterra ( German  England ) and 1930 the Distrito de Novas Nações ( German  New Nations ). Andrade is behind the church of Anjos. It was named after the owner of the land Manuel Goncalves Pereira de Andrade . The streets in the neighborhood were named after women in his family. The main thoroughfare was avenue D. Amélia , which since the establishment of the Republic of Av. Almirante Reis is called.

The Franca hills ( German: France ) are part of the Inglaterra district . He was previously called Brás Simoes , after the Lisbon merchant and owner of the built-up area. The name was changed at the time of the First World War . The streets of the neighborhood bear the names of British cities like Cardiff, Manchester and Liverpool and the British John Milton and Isaac Newton .

The district of Novas Nações was called Distrito de Colônias ( German  district of the colonies ) until April 25, 1974 and before 1967 Charca . The streets are named after former Portuguese colonies. Here you can find the streets of Angola , Cabo Verde , Guiné , Ilha do Príncipe , Ilha de S.Tomé , Macau , Mozambique , Timor and Zaire as well as the Largo dos Novas Nações.

On September 29, 2013, Anjos was dissolved as a municipality as part of the regional reform of the city of Lisbon and part of the new municipality of Arroios .
