The Anna Hospital is a listed building in the Feldstadt district of Schwerin . It housed the first children's hospital in Mecklenburg and is now mainly used as a community center for the Schwerin Castle Church community .

history

Ida Masius , the head of the Schwerin Women's Association for Nursing , founded a hospital foundation in 1866 with the aim of "providing poor sick children who cannot find healing care either in their families or in communal hospitals" . Care was given to deaconesses from the Bethlehem Abbey in Ludwigslust . In 1870 the state was recognized as a corporation and legal person ( pium corpus ). It was the first hospital specially for children in Mecklenburg.

The first building was on Waisenstrasse (today Bornhövedstrasse). In 1882, a donation from the Grand Duke enabled the new building in Bleicherstraße, which was planned by Georg Daniel , and which was expanded in 1902 (today's address: Platz der Jugend 25 ). The two-storey building with a central risalit has a yellow clinker brick facade with red clinker strips . The building could be occupied on July 1, 1883. The Grand Duke and his third wife had made the donation in memory of his daughter Anna , who died on February 8, 1882 at the age of 16, from his second marriage to Grand Duchess Anna of Hesse and the Rhine (1843–1865) who died of childbed fever in 1865. 1865) made; hence the name of the hospital from then on was Anna Hospital .

The defining chief physician in the founding phase was Carl von Mettenheimer . The Anna Hospital was the only children's hospital in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin until 1916 . In 1896, serum therapy against diphtheria began here . In 1899 the hospital received its first X-ray machine. Extension buildings followed in 1928/29 and 1983/86. The buildings were used as a hospital until June 30, 1994.

Todays use

In 2003 the Schwerin Castle Parish acquired the main building and expanded it into a parish center by 2010. Today there are community rooms with a kitchen, a community hall, the children's and youth cellar, the community office and a shadow theater. In addition, the house is used by the Diakonie welfare station Dom / Schloss , a senior meeting place, the Rappelkiste childcare facility and the Schwerin Hospice Association.

The Montessori School, Evangelical Integrative School Schwerin as a primary school with an orientation level is located in other buildings . The state-approved substitute school has been run by the Diakoniewerk Neues Ufer since 1999 .

Foundation, endowment

The Anna Hospital Foundation in Schwerin still exists as a church foundation with legal capacity under private law and, following the sale of the property, received a new statute in 2003, which, with a change from January 18, 2005, is still valid today. Today's purpose of the foundation is to support and promote socially disadvantaged and individually handicapped children, adolescents and young adults within the meaning of §§ 53, 54 of the applicable tax code , especially in the area of ​​Schwerin parishes. The foundation's assets are 100,000 euros.
