Anna D. Shapiro

Anna D. Shapiro (* 1967 in Evanston , Illinois ) is an American theater director .

Life

Anna Shapiro studied first at Columbia College Chicago and later at the Yale School of Drama . In 1995 she started working for the Steppenwolf Theater Company for many years . In 1996 she staged her first play there, The Viewing Room , based on a template by Daniel J. Rubin. In the same year she was awarded the Princess Grace Award . In the next few years she staged numerous plays with the ensemble of the Steppenwolf Theater Company. Since 2005 she has been a permanent member of the Steppenwolf Ensemble. She celebrated her greatest success in 2007 with the production of Tracy Letts August: Osage Country , for which she received the Tony Award for best director , the Jefferson Award for best director and the Drama Desk Award for best director. The great success was followed by a call to New York's Broadway , where she staged August: Osage Country for two more seasons. In 2014 she directed Of Mice and Men with James Franco in the role of George and Chris O'Dowd in the role of Lennie .

Since 2002 Shapiro has also served as Director of the Graduate Directing Program in Theater at Northwestern University . At the beginning of the 2015/2016 season, she will take over the post of artistic director of the Steppenwolf Theater Company from her long-term predecessor Martha Lavey .
