Anna Maria Corazza Bildt (born March 10, 1963 in Rome ) is a Swedish - Italian politician ( Moderaterna ), entrepreneur and former diplomat. She has been a member of the European Parliament since the 2009 European elections . She has been married to the former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt since 1998 , with whom she has one child.

Life

Diplomatic career

Corazza Bildt studied political science at La Sapienza University in Rome and completed postgraduate studies in conflict management at the University of San Diego and in strategy at Columbia University in New York .

After completing her studies, she worked for UNESCO in Paris and in 1988 began working as an expert on development issues at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1989 she was transferred to the Permanent Mission of Italy to the OECD in Paris, where she was responsible for negotiations with the World Bank .

In 1991 Corazza Bildt was seconded to the United Nations Secretariat in Geneva , where she worked for the Deputy Secretary General responsible for human rights , the Swede Jan Mårtensson . From 1992 to 1998 she worked for the United Nations in Yugoslavia on various assignments . This included work at UNPROFOR in Croatia and a stationing at the United Nations Office in Sarajevo during the time the city was besieged. During this time in Yugoslavia, Corazza Bildt also met her future husband Carl Bildt , who was High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1995 to 1997 .

Later, from 2001 to 2003, she was again in Bosnia and Herzegovina on behalf of the European Commission .

Start of political activities

After her marriage to Carl Bildt , Corazza Bildt began to get involved in the Swedish conservative Moderaterna party , of which Carl Bildt was chairman until 1999. Since 2003 she has been the party's executive board spokeswoman. In 2003 she got involved in the ultimately failed referendum on the introduction of the euro in Sweden. In 2006 she signed the appeal Bevara äktenskapet (“Save marriage”), an ultimately unsuccessful campaign against the introduction of same-sex marriage in Sweden.

In addition, Corazza Bildt was spokeswoman for the board of the Swedish Red Cross from 2003 to 2008 .

Activity as an entrepreneur

In 2000 Corazza Bildt founded the family business Italian Tradition , which sells Italian delicacies over the Internet . In 2006 she founded the Relais de Charme Tabiano Castello hotel with her brother . She is the board spokeswoman for the Italian Chamber of Commerce Abroad in Sweden.

Together with the Swedish journalist and writer Magdalena Ribbing , Corazza Bildt also wrote a travel guide about the city of Parma .

Member of the European Parliament

In the European elections in Sweden in 2009 , Corazza Bildt was elected to the European Parliament . She achieved 14.3% of the preferential votes on the Moderaterna list, the second-best result after top candidate Gunnar Hökmark .

In Parliament she joined the Christian Democratic-Conservative EPP Group and is a member of the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection .

She is one of 89 people from the European Union against whom Russia imposed an entry ban in May 2015 .
