Anna Porphyrogenneta

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anna Porphyrogenita (even Anna of Byzantium , Russian Анна Византийская , ancient Greek Άννα even Helena (); * 13 March 963 ; † 1011 / 1012 ) was wife of Vladimir the Great , Grand Prince of Kiev .

Life

Anna was a daughter of the Byzantine emperor Romanos II and his wife Theophanu , hence her nickname Porphyrogenneta . She was born on March 13, 963.

In 988 Vladimir moved to the Byzantine Empire with 6,000 warriors . He besieged the city of Chersonese and threatened to attack Constantinople if he did not get the sister of the Byzantine emperors Basil II and Constantine VIII to wife. They reluctantly agreed on the condition that Vladimir would be baptized and provide military aid against the Bulgarians. Anna followed "with tears". Vladimir was baptized and married Anna.

After his return he declared Christianity to be the state religion in Kievan Rus according to the Greek Orthodox rite . Anna is said to have "built many churches" and advised Vladimir on church matters.

There is no further news about Anna's life. She died in 1011 or 1012. Her grave was in St. Mary's Church in Kiev next to Vladimir.

Descendants of Anna and Vladimir are not known.
