Anna Sadurska

Anna Sadurska (née Lenkiewicz ; born September 1, 1921 in Warsaw , Poland ; † March 3, 2004 ibid) was a Polish classical archaeologist .

biography

Anna Sadurska studied Classical Philology and Classical Archeology. Her first job was in the Department of Ancient Art of the National Museum in Warsaw from 1949 to 1951 . During this time she wrote her first academic essays on the influence of ancient art on Polish culture. From 1951 she worked as a lecturer at the University of Warsaw . She was a member of the first Polish archaeological expedition after the Second World War under Kazimierz Michałowski in Myrmekion in Crimea . She then became Kazimierz Michałowski's closest collaborator at the University of Warsaw. In 1957, Sadurska was Michałowski's assistant during excavations in Athribis in Egypt . In 1964, Sadurska published an important work on 19 fragmentary small stone reliefs, the so-called Tabulae Iliacae , showing scenes from the Trojan War . 1970–1971 she directed the Polish excavations in Palmyra in Syria . She discovered the tomb of the 'Alaine family in Palmyra. After Michałowski's departure, she took over the management of the Department of Mediterranean Archeology at the University of Warsaw. She has given lectures at the Department of Mediterranean Archeology and the Department of Art History of the University of Warsaw, the Academy of Catholic Theology Warsaw , the University of Łódź and many scientific institutes around the world. Sadurska was a member of the German Archaeological Institute , the Committee for Ancient Culture of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Philological Society.

Anna Sadurska was married to the lawyer Franciszek Sadurski (born 1911; died 2000). Together they had a son, the lawyer, political scientist and philosopher Wojciech Sadurski (born 1950) and several daughters.

Anna Sadurska wrote several books and about 200 scientific articles. She wrote for young people and readers interested in humanism and appeared on radio and television to make the ancient world more popular.
