Kazimierz Józef Marian Michałowski (born November 11, 1901 in Tarnopol , † January 1, 1981 in Warsaw ) was a Polish archaeologist and Egyptologist .

biography

Michalowski studied Classical Archeology and Art History at the University of Lviv . He also studied at universities and institutes in Berlin , Paris , Heidelberg , Münster , Rome , Athens and Cairo . From 1933 he was professor of archeology of the Mediterranean region at the University of Warsaw , from 1945 to 1981 he was also the deputy director of the Warsaw National Museum .

Michalowski's interest in Egyptology began in 1937 when he participated in the Tell Edfu excavation for two years . It was a Polish-French collaboration that was organized by him. The results of this expedition were later published in three volumes. Some of the excavation pieces were brought to the National Museum in Warsaw.

He spent the Second World War in the Woldenberg prison camp . After the end of the Second World War, he played a decisive role in the rebuilding of academic life in Poland. He also built a community dedicated to studying Mediterranean cultures. In 1959 he founded the Polish Center for Mediterranean Archeology in Cairo, which was later named after him.

He later directed several excavations on Egyptian soil. In 1957 he dug in Tell Atrib, three years later in Alexandria and 1961 in Dabod, from 1961 to 1964 in Faras . Since 1960 he has been a corresponding member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences . He was an honorary doctor of several universities (Cambridge, Strasbourg, Uppsala).
